Discount rate or interest rate?

The discount rate is the price cut when the bill is bought below face value. The interest rate is what that discount works out to if you hold the bill until it matures, measured on the lower purchase price rather than the face value. That is why the interest rate is higher. Compare a savings account with the interest rate, not the discount rate. Both numbers on this page are copied from the Bank of Ghana table. Iron Wealth does not recompute them.

What do 91, 182, and 364 days mean?

The number is how long the bill runs before it matures and pays back its face value. A 91-day bill returns your money in about three months, a 182-day bill in about six, and a 364-day bill in about a year. Each interest rate is quoted as a yearly figure, so a shorter bill earns only its share of that rate. At an example rate of 20%, GHS 1,000 in a 91-day bill earns about 1,000 × 0.20 × 91 ÷ 364 = GHS 50 before tax and fees. Shorter bills give you the cash back sooner. Longer bills hold a rate for longer.

How does a T-bill sit next to your MoMo balance?

Buying a bill moves money out of MTN MoMo or a bank account into an investment you still own, so your net worth should not drop. In Iron Wealth, add the bill as a GHS investment account and record the purchase as a transfer from the wallet. When it matures, transfer the purchase amount back and log the gain as interest income.
